WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 7) – After falling behind early in the second half, the Waynesburg women's soccer team battled hard down the stretch, but couldn't complete a furious comeback attempt and fell to Saint Vincent 2-1 on a frigid Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Vincent (2-10) opened the scoring just seconds into the second half when Michelle Stepien buried a shot to make it 1-0. Roughly 19 minutes later, Stepien did it again, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.
With time winding down, Waynesburg (3-7) cranked up the pressure and went on the attack. The home team finally struck pay dirt when sophomore Melody Cox recorded her first goal of the season with 6:46 to go in the contest.
The Jackets had several more scoring opportunities as the game expired, but the Bearcats were able to turn them away.
Sophomore keeper Katrina Kelly started and played all 90 minutes for Waynesburg. She piled up 13 saves on the night. Saint Vincent's Kirstie Mills stopped five shots on goal to get the win.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday, when they host La Roche College at 6:30 p.m.
