WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 4) – For the first 20 minutes of their game with Thomas More, the Waynesburg women's basketball team hung right with the 10th-ranked Saints.
However, the second period didn't go nearly as well as the first for the Jackets. They were out-scored 41-24 in the second half and fell to Thomas More 73-52. The loss drops Waynesburg to 6-14 on the year and 3-7 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Saints continue to lead the PAC with a 10-1 mark and an 18-2 overall record.
The game started out well for the Waynesburg women as they used an attacking style of offense to keep the game close, trailing by just four (32-28) at halftime. However, the Saints used a 20-3 run to open the second period to take a 52-31 advantage and go on to victory from there.
Struggles from the floor and from beyond the three-point arc especially, played a large part in the Saints' victory, particularly in the second half. In the final 20 minutes of action, the Saints connected 16-of-32 shots from the floor and five-of-10 from downtown. The Jackets managed to hit on eight-of-25 field goals in the second half and just two-of 12 attempts from downtown.
The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore forward Elisha Jones, who tallied a team-best 17 points. Freshman forward Callie White added 14 and junior guard Johnna Deco tallied nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds to just miss out on a double-double.
The Saints were paced by sophomore center Nicole Dickman, who poured in a game-high 21. Senior guard Jayme Thiem added 19 to the winning effort.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7, when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to face Westminster in a PAC showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
