BEREA, OHIO (Feb. 7) – Despite resting several of their top wrestlers, the Waynesburg University wrestling team performed well enough to place second at the six-team John Summa Memorial Tournament, which was hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets scored 104 total points, placing them second behind the champions from Brockport State (N.Y.), who tallied 154 points, and ahead of third-place Baldwin-Wallace (97.50). Fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Thiel also competed at the event and placed fifth (79).
The Jackets were led by first-year 197-pounder Corbin Semple (pictured above during an earlier match), who cruised to his second individual title of the year. The Waynesburg native pinned his way to the crown, sticking B-W's Ryan Tudor to his back in 4:36 in the semifinals and Brockports' Tom Voorhis to the mat in 4:05 to claim the crown.
Six other Jackets also placed in the top four of their respective weight classes. Junior heavyweight Rich Janicki and freshman 157-pounder Jared Roberts each finished second in their respective weight classes.
Freshman 125-pounder Rico Borz and sophomore 141-pounder Pat McCabe each earned a third-place finish on the day. Jacket freshmen Dean Baker (141) and Alex Evanoff (165) added fourth-place finishes to the Jackets' day.
Sophomore 133-pounder Nick Garber and freshman 149-pounder Jesse Byerly did not compete in the event for the Yellow Jackets.
