NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (March 28) – It was a tale of two games for the Waynesburg softball team on Saturday, when they traveled to Westminster to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against the Titans.
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets won their seventh game in a row, which is the team's longest winning streak since before the 2002 season, by the final of 3-2 in eight innings. Unfortunately, game two didn't go nearly as well as the Jackets saw that streak end with a 11-0 loss in five innings.
Following the split, Waynesburg improved to 7-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Titans record jumped to 3-12-1 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.
During the opener, the Jackets took advantage of three Westminster errors, which led to all three of the Jackets' unearned runs. In the top of the second, a Titan miscue led to left fielder Nicole Coleman singling in catcher Kristyn Klueg.
The following inning, Waynesburg stretched their lead to 2-0 when starting pitcher Autumn Minor scored on a fielding error during the at-bat of Klueg.
Westminster was able to tie the game up with a run in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to grasp victory in the seventh, when they put two runners on with two outs on the board, but couldn't push the final run across home plate.
In the top of the eighth, second baseman Bre Kokladas led off with a single and two batters later, Klueg singled her in to put Waynesburg ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Minor and her defense gave up just a walk to seal the victory.
The Waynesburg native won her fourth-straight decision of the year after giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Minor added three strikeouts to her day and also went three-for-five at the plate with a double and a run scored. Kokladas and Klueg added two hits a piece.
Unfortunately, game two didn't go nearly as well for Waynesburg as they gave up five runs in the top of the first and never recovered. The Titans added a run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to seal up the victory.
The Jackets were out-hit 14-3 in game two. Sophomore hurler Amanda Baughman took the loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings of work.
Waynesburg will try to start a new winning streak on Thursday, April 2, when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to battle Saint Vincent in a double-header.
