ERIE, Pa. (Dec. 16) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team got off to a good start, but couldn't finish off a strong Mercyhurst squad on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets picked up wins in four of the first six bouts of the evening, but dropped the last four contests of the match as the Lakers won 22-16.

Sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crown, who was wrestling with an illness, gutted out a 6-5 win over Ryan Bohince to start the match off. After Mercyhurst rebounded with a victory at 133, Waynesburg senior 141-pounder Nick Garber picked up six points on an injury default to move the Jackets ahead 9-3. Garber led 2-0 at the time of the default.

Freshman 149-pounder Luke Lohr put his team up 12-3 after earning a 12-5 victory. After the Jackets saw their lead shrink to 12-7 following a major decision at 157, junior Alex Evanoff earned the team's last win of the night with a 9-0 major decision triumph.

Waynesburg (5-2-1) returns to action on Saturday when the Yellow Jackets host Muskingum for a 6 p.m. match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
