WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 25) – The Waynesburg University softball team picked up their first two-game sweep of the season on a rainy Thursday afternoon by beating Carlow University 9-0 in game one and 7-6 in a rain-shortened game two of a doubleheader.
The wins improve the Yellow Jackets' record to 4-8 on the year, while Carlow dropped to 6-6.
The Jackets cruised to the opening-game win behind perhaps their best offensive performance of the season and a stellar pitching effort from junior hurler Amanda Baughman. Waynesburg picked up two runs in the bottom of the first, added three in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth. After Baughman and her defense recorded the third out in the top of the fifth, the game was called on account of the eight-run mercy rule.
The righty allowed just three hits over five innings of work for her first shutout of the season. She walked two and struck out two. Senior second baseman Bre Kokladas went two-for-two at the plate with a game-high three RBI. First baseman Elysia Orison drove in a pair of runs, while Baughman, catcher Lizz Bombara and shortstop Rachael Moon scored two runs a piece.
As a team, the Jackets out-hit the Celtics 9-3.
Waynesburg won game two after the contest was called early because of increased rain. In the weather-shortened victory, the Jackets built up a 7-1 lead after two innings of play and held on for the win. Baughman went two-for-two in the win with a homerun and four runs driven in.
The Jackets are scheduled to return to the diamond on Saturday, March 27, when they host Saint Vincent for a doubleheader.
