Men's and women's track teams compete at Wheeling Jesuit

Jones and Rocco qualify provisionally for nationals in the javelin

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University men's and women's track and field teams got the outdoor portion of their season underway this past Saturday, when they competed at the Bill Van Horne Invitational, which was hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University.

 

The Yellow Jacket women led four schools from the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) with a solid seventh-place finish in the 17-team field. The Jacket men placed 11th out of 14 squads.

 

Several Yellow Jackets qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships, including junior Elisha Jones and sophomore Marybeth Rocco, who both qualified for ECAC's in the javelin. The pair also posted national provisional qualifying marks in the event. The Jacket pair placed one-two in the field with Rocco taking the title on a toss of 39.97 meters (131' 2”) and Jones finishing right behind her with a distance of 39.18 meters (128' 6”).

 

Sophomore Krystal Baker set a new school record, while winning the high jump and qualifying for the ECAC Championships in the event with a leap of 1.6 meters (5' 3”). She also placed third in the pole vault with a height of 9' 6.25”, second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.77 meters (35' 4”)

 

 Junior Mikey Macosko also qualified for ECAC's in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.21 seconds. Macosko also placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.40.

 

Sophomore Carly Schubert placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 11.31 meters (37' 1.25”), while also posting an eighth-place finish in the discus on a toss of 34.58 meters (113' 5”).

 

On the men's side, freshman Kurt Bonnet made a good first impression on his teammates with a 10th-place finish in the discus, while competing in a 39-individual field, with a throw of 39.99 meters (131' 2”). Sprinter Jordan Wrask added a strong performance in the 200 meters with a 13-place time of 23.3 seconds in the 54-man field and a sixth-place time of 11.49 in the 100-meter dash.

 

Waynesburg returns to action on April 3, when the Yellow Jackets are scheduled to compete at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.
