WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team won its third and fourth games in a row this past Saturday by sweeping a home doubleheader with Saint Vincent College by the scores of 7-1 and 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets' overall record jumped up to 6-8 on the season, while the Bearcats fell to 5-7.

The Jackets immediately showed some power at the plate against the Bearcats in as junior pitcher Amanda Baughman scored the game's first run with a solo homerun off Saint Vincent hurler Emily Lauterbach.

Waynesburg added a run in both the second and third innings to build a 3-0 lead after three frames. Still leading 3-0 going into the fifth, the Jackets put the game out of reach by launching another ball out of the park. With one out on the board, shortstop Rachael Moon reached base on an error. Right fielder Brittany Lyle and Baughman both followed with one-out walks to load the bases for freshman catcher Lizz Bombara. The first-year back-stopper then delivered her first collegiate homerun in the form of a grand slam, which gave the home team a 7-0 lead.

The Bearcats got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, who struggled to get their offense going against Baughman. The righty scattered five hits and a walk over seven innings of play to pick up her third-straight win of the year. She piled up 10 strikeouts in the victory. Baughman also went two-for-two at the plate with her long ball, a double and two RBI.

Game two was more of a pitchers duel between the two squads as Waynesburg junior Kristen Lautenschlager went toe-to-toe with Saint Vincent freshman Shauna Hetrick.

The Yellow Jackets, who served as the visiting team in the contest, got on the board first when first baseman Elysia Orison belted her first collegiate homerun to put her team up 1-0 in the top of the second.

After the Bearcats tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Jackets regained the advantage in the top of the sixth when Baughman was able to score from third on a throwing error.

Waynesburg scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh. After Moon belted a one-out triple to right-center field, Lyle brought her home with a groundout to second base.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Vincent pushed a run home, but starting pitcher Kristen Lautenschlager struck out Lynn Buffoni to seal up the win.

Lautenschlager, who has steadily improved in the pitching circle throughout the season, won her second-straight decision by working all seven innings against the Bearcats. She allowed just two hits and walked four, while also striking out three. Only one of the runs she gave up was earned.

Orison led Waynesburg at the plate in game two by going two-for-three at the dish with the long ball and a single.

The Jackets are not scheduled to return to play until April 6, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader.
