Waynesburg track team competes at Slippery Rock

Yellow Jacket women break school records and achieve ECAC and national qualifying marks

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University track & field team had a fruitful day of competition at the Slippery Rock University Invitational on Saturday.

 

The Yellow Jacket women were led by sophomore thrower Marybeth Rocco had a huge day with outstanding performances in both the javelin and discus. She broke the school outdoor women's javelin record with a first-place throw of 42.39 meters (139' 1”) that was good enough to qualify her provisionally for nationals for a second time this year. She also qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in the discus with a toss of 37.02 meters (121' 5”), which broke the Waynesburg record in the event.

 

The Jackets got a second ECAC qualifying effort from junior runner Maria Shepas. Shepas won the 3,000-meter women's steeplechase with a time of 11:47.84, which was more than six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and which shattered Shepas' previous school record by more than 38 seconds.

 

Junior women's jumper Krystal Baker placed second in the high jump (1.5 meters, 4' 11”) and triple jump (10.83 meters, 35' 7”), and freshman Jaimee Post did the same in the long jump (4.84 meters, 15' 10”).

 

On the men's side, freshman thrower Kurt Bonnet recorded a fourth-place finish in the discus with a heave of 40.81 meters (133' 8”).

 

There was no team scoring at the event.

 

Waynesburg is scheduled to return to competition on April 16 at the Indiana University of Pa. (IUP) Invitational.
