Track & field team sweeps team titles at PAC South Quad Meet

Jacket women win 12 individual titles in blowout win, while men add five championships

BETHANY, W.Va. (April 21) – The Waynesburg University track & field team had a day to remember at the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) South Quad Meet on Wednesday at Bethany College.

 

Both the Yellow Jacket men and women took home their respective team titles, while competing against Bethany, Washington & Jefferson and Geneva colleges. The Waynesburg women totaled 209 team points, which was 52 points ahead of second-place Bethany (157). The Jacket men racked up 160 points, while Geneva placed second with 130.

 

The Jacket women took home 12 individual championships during their victory. Sophomore Krystal Baker led the way with wins in the high jump (1.57 meters, 5' 1.75”), long jump (5.05 meters, 16' 7”), triple jump (11.66 meters, 38' 3.25”) and pole vault (3.2 meters, 10' 6”). She also set meet records in each of the four events, set a new school record in the triple and long jumps, and qualified for nationals in the triple jump.


Sophomore Carly Schubert was victorious in the shot put (11.50 meters, 37' 8.75”) and the discus (35.31 meters, 115' 10”), while setting a new meet record in the discus.

 

Junior Elisha Jones added a victory in the javelin (40.95 meters, 134' 4”) to Waynesburg's day as they swept the field events.

 

Waynesburg also enjoyed plenty of success in the track events. Junior Maria Shepas recorded victories in the 800 (2:24.9) and 1,500-meter (4:58.52) runs. She was also part of the victorious 4x400 meter relay team (4:28.27). Shepas teamed up with sophomore Hannah Hunter, freshman Rhea Huwe and junior Mikey Macosko for the win.

 

Freshman Casey Morris added a win in the 5,000-meter run (21:12.4) and Waynesburg got a victory in the 100 meters thanks to Huwe, who finished the event in 13.01 seconds.

 

On the men's side, the Jackets picked up five individual wins, including a sweep in the two relay races. The quartet of junior Bill Moder, senior Tom Hudson, sophomore Jordan Wrask and junior Trale Merz teamed up to win 4x100 (43.6 seconds) and 4x400 (3:31) relays. Waynesburg's time in the men's 4x400 set a new school record, and its time in the 4x100 qualified the quartet for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.

 

The Jackets added a third win on the track thanks to junior Adam Swingle, who picked up a victory 5,000-meter run (18:02.96).

 

Freshman thrower Doogie Sanner blew away the field in the javelin. He set a stadium and modern team record of 54.54 meters (178' 11”). Staying in the field events, freshman Mike Wright won the high jump with a leap of 1.65 meters (5' 5”).

 

It was the second-straight year that the Waynesburg women took the team title at the PAC South Quad Meet. Both the Waynesburg men and women are scheduled to return to competition on Saturday, April 24, when they travel to Baldwin-Wallace College.
