GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 28) - Thanks in large part to the efforts of junior pitcher Amanda Baughman, the Waynesburg University softball team swept a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests from Grove City on Wednesday.
Baughman tossed a two-hitter in a 4-0 win in game one. She followed that up by driving in the game-winning run in a 5-4 victory in the late contest. With the wins, the Yellow Jackets improved to 13-17 on the season and 6-8 in PAC play. Grove City dropped to 12-21 on the year and 5-7 in conference action.
In the opener, Baughman enjoyed one of her top performances in the season. She gave up just two singles in the shutout win, didn't walk a hitter and struck out six Wolverines while leading her team to victory. The Jackets got all the offense they needed in the top of the first when junior shortstop Kristen Lautenschlager and freshman catcher Lizz Bombara each scored unearned runs to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
An RBI triple by Bombarra made it 3-0 Jackets in the top of the third, and Waynesburg put the final nail in the coffin in the top of the sixth when sophomore third baseman Samantha Volponi doubled home junior centerfielder Amber Pivik to make it 4-0.
Bombarra led all hitters with a game-high two hits in four at-bats.
Pulling out a win in game two was a bit more difficult for the visitors, especially after GCC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, Waynesburg tied the contest up at 1-1 when freshman shortstop Rachael Moon tripled and scored on a throwing error.
Grove City regained a one-run lead (2-1) in the top of the fifth, but the Jackets grabbed the advantage for the first time in the late contest when they brought three runs across home plate in the bottom of the sixth. Pivik drove in a run with a fielder's choice play to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Waynesburg got a clutch two-out, two-run single by Volponi that gave the Jackets a 4-2 lead.
After Grove City tied the game in the top of the seventh (4-4), Lautenschlager led off with a single and Moon bunted her to second. With one out on the board, Baughman came through with the game-winning double down the right field line to score Lautenschlager and end the game.
Though not as dominant as she was in the opener, Baughman picked up her second win of the day by pitching another seven-inning complete game. She gave up four runs on 11 hits, but struck out nine Grove City batters.
Lautenschlager led all Waynesburg hitters with two hits in four at-bats.
Waynesburg is scheduled to end its regular season on Saturday, May 1, with a doubleheader at Geneva.
