Invitational Results
WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 3) – Behind a strong total-team performance, the Waynesburg University women's track team tied for first place out of 14 squads at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday. The Yellow Jacket men also enjoyed a successful day with a sixth-place finish out of 14 schools.
Along with the usual strong outings from their throwers, the Jacket women excelled in almost all aspects of track & field while in Washington. Freshman Rhea Huwe was one of multiple winners on the day after running the women's 100 meters in 13 seconds flat. Waynesburg picked up another win on the track when junior Maria Shepas took home the gold in the 1,500-meter run after crossing the finish line in 4:57.29.
Junior Mikey Macosko continued a solid day on the track for her team with second-place finishes in both the 100-meter (15.93 seconds) and 400-meter (1:08.44) hurdles.
Moving to the field events, sophomore Krystal Baker, the reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Field Athlete of the Week, enjoyed another solid all-around performance in the jumping events. She placed second in the high jump (1.5 meters, 4' 11”), second in the pole vault (3.1 meters, 10' 2”) and third in the triple jump (10.77 meters, 33' 6”).
The always strong Waynesburg women's throwers lived up to their reputations. Sophomore Carly Schubert placed in the top four in both the shot put and discus, while classmate Marybeth Rocco did the same in the discus and javelin. Junior standout Elisha Jones added a second-place finish in the javelin.
The Waynesburg men were led by junior Trale Merz and freshman Doogie Sanner, who earned victories for the Yellow Jackets on the track and in the field. Merz took home first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.38, while Sanner won his first collegiate javelin title with a heave of 50.3 meters (165' 0”).
The Waynesburg women tied with Allegheny College for top team honors with 112 points. Carnegie Mellon rounded out the rest of the top three with 96. CMU finished first in the men's ranks with 136 points, while the host Presidents of W&J took second with 115 and Denison took the bronze with 88 points.
The Waynesburg men's and women's track & field teams are scheduled to return to action on April 10, when they compete at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
