The Jackets look to overcome last years loss to the Alumni after several close matches this season with ranked opponents
WAYNESBURG, PA (April. 5) – The Jackets will again play host to the returning Waynesburg Alumni in one of the most anticipated matches each season this upcoming Saturday, April 10th at 3pm in the Rudy Marisa Field House. A collection of alumni spanning close to 7 years of team history will return to Waynesburg University in an attempt to repeat last years winning performance while this year's current Jacket squad is still looking for its first win against the Alumni in program history.
The alumni team will boast some of the best hitting Waynesburg University has ever seen. Outside hitters Eric Schons (08), David Peters (07), Jeremy Bassett (07) and Scott Carson (07) will make themselves comfortable at strong side with help in the middle of the court from Nick Staffieri (08) and Marcus Petrisek (05). David Kaczmarek (03) will return for his first Alumni Match after a healthy career at middle for the squad during its inaugural year back in 2003. (Other notable returning alumni include right side hitter Dan Gottron (08) and Tyler Allen (08). Recent graduate Aaron Patterson (09) will make his first appearance on the court since a senior season ending injury back in 2009 and current Head Coach James Patterson will again offer up his services at right side and defensive specialist.
Last years match saw the Yellow Jackets take a 2 – 0 set lead on the Alumni before the old timers found a groove and tuned up 2 set wins of their own. The fifth and final set to 15 was a race to the end with the Alumni coming out on top as they upset the Jackets 17-15 for a 3 – 2 match victory. The current Jackets squad has more depth and talent to offer this year across the net and the alumni will need to re-learn how block and play floor defense again if they hope to keep sets close and Ws within reach.
The day will begin at 3:00pm with the gym doors opening at 2:00pm. An Alumni and senior players presentation will take place prior to the start of the match with photos and trophy presentations occurring following the conclusion of the event.
