Jones makes program history at Slippery Rock

Junior thrower becomes school's first automatic qualifier for nationals

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 7) – Junior thrower Elisha Jones made Waynesburg University track & field history on Friday at the Slippery Rock University Qualifier with a single throw of the javelin.

 

Jones became the first automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships after a school-record throw of 44.40 meters (145' 8”), which won her the event. That distance is the third best in Division III this year.

 

Jones' teammate, sophomore Marybeth Rocco, placed second in the javelin with a throw of 40.84 meters (133' 11.9). The Jacket women also got a first-place effort from sophomore Krystal Baker, who posted the top mark in the triple jump with a distance of 11.05 meters (36' 3”).

 

The Waynesburg men were paced by juniors Jordan Wrask and Trale Merz, who finished one-two in the 100-meter dash. Wrask took first with a time of 11.13 seconds, while Merz followed at 11.36 seconds.

 

There were no team standings recorded.

 

The Yellow Jackets return to action on May 13, when they will compete at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which will be hosted by Springfield (Mass.) College.
