PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 7) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team won its first game of the season by downing La Roche 3-2 on Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by junior Erick Burke and freshman Tim Fields. Fields added an assist on Burke's goal, while junior David Floyd helped on Fields' first collegiate score.
La Roche cut the deficit to 2-1 before halftime, but a score by senior Ryan Hartz in the 48th minute of the contest ended up being the game winner. Burke set up Hartz for the eventual game-winner.
The Redhawks were able to cut the lead to 3-2 in the 74th minute, but the Jackets held on for the victory.
Senior Waynesburg keeper Ryan Hunsberger made four saves on the afternoon to clinch the victory for the visiting team. The Yellow Jackets picked up the win, despite being out-shot 8-7.
The victory was the first for new men's and women's head coach Sean McCarthy.
The Jackets will look to keep the winning ways going on Saturday, Sept. 11, when they host Frostburg State for their home opener.
