Men's soccer celebrates senior night

Yellow Jackets give up two second-half goals and fall 4-2 to Saint Vincent

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team celebrated senior night under rainy skies at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday night with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) clash against Saint Vincent.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets' four seniors were unable to celebrate a victory after the Bearcats scored two second-half goals to beat their hosts 4-2. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in PAC play. Saint Vincent improved to 3-9-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference competition.

The first half was an exciting back-and-forth 45 minutes of action with Saint Vincent scoring on a penalty kick and the Yellow Jackets responding with freshman Ray Melone taking a feed from senior Erick Burke in the 14th minute of play to tie the game at 1-1. One minute later, the Bearcats re-established a one goal lead at 2-1, but the Jackets stayed right in the game with an impressive unassisted goal from freshman Jude Anuwe during the 21st minute of action that tied score at 2-2.

After more than 20 minutes of offensive fireworks, the scoring died down over the next 40-plus minutes of play before Saint Vincent scored the eventual game winner in the 62nd minute of play. Already up 3-2, the Bearcats tacked on an insurance goal in the 87th minute.

Waynesburg held a 15-14 edge in shots and recorded four corner shots to Saint Vincent's two. Senior Ryan Hunsberger got the start in net and made six saves over 90 minutes of action.

The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they host Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The contest will be held as Waynesburg's Kick Pancreatic Cancer game.
