Men's soccer notches home PAC win

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team picked up a big Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win on Wednesday night to stay in the race for a spot in the four-team conference playoffs. After falling behind 1-0, the Yellow Jackets scored three unanswered goals to take down Bethany 3-1 at John F. Wiley Stadium.

After the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Bison (5-11, 3-4) broke up the 0-0 contest in the 48th minute of action. However, the Waynesburg (8-8, 3-4) offense sprang to life 18 minutes later when senior David Floyd took a feed from sophomore Stephen Zimmerman and found the back of the net in the 66th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

From there, freshman Juan Alvarez took over and put the game away by scoring a pair of goals, the first of which came in the 71st minute. Fellow first-year Jacket Jude Anuwe assisted on the eventual game-winner. Alvarez struck again four minutes later and yet another freshman, Joakim Coleman, notched the assist.

Waynesburg's second-half offensive outburst preserved a win for freshman goalkeeper Austin Ganzke, who made 11 saves on the evening. The Yellow Jackets earned the victory despite being out-shot 19-15 and yielding seven corner kicks to the Bison, while attempting just three of their own.

With the victory, the Jackets, who are now in a three-way tie for fourth place, set up a big regular season finale at Thomas More this Saturday. Start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
