Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 12) – For the second time in two years, the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Backyard Brawl between I-79 rivals Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson came down to a last-second special teams play to determine its outcome. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the result wasn't in their favor as a 34-yard Eric Eberle field goal with no time showing on the clock was the game-deciding play in a 24-21 Presidents victory.

The loss gives Waynesburg a final regular season record of 5-4 and a 5-3 mark in PAC play. With the win, the Presidents improved to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The game was played as part of PAC Football Rivalry Week.

Things did not start well for Waynesburg as two turnovers helped W&J build up a 21-0 halftime lead. However, the Jackets regained their composure at halftime and came out looking like a totally different squad.

W&J took the opening kickoff and were forced into a three-and-out situation by the Waynesburg defense. Junior Tyler Fatigante blocked the ensuing punt and senior Brandon Myers fell on the loose ball to give the Waynesburg offense possession at the opposing 13-yard line. Four plays later, all runs by senior Justin Falcon, the visiting team broke up the shutout with a one-yard touchdown dive over the top of both lines. Senior Chris Marini knocked in the extra point and Waynesburg cut W&J's lead to 21-7 less than five minutes into the third quarter.

Waynesburg's defense kept up the pressure and forced another three-and-out on the ensuing President possession. Another President miscue on a punt try, this time a botched snap, gave the Jackets possession at the W&J 20-yard line. Three plays later, senior quarterback Josh Graham found fellow senior Jeff Young for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 8:12 to play in the third period. Another Marini kick made it 21-14 Presidents with momentum clearly on Waynesburg's side.

The visiting team still trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter, but the offense was on the march at the end of the third period. The Jackets started the fourth with the ball at the W&J 12-yard line and on the first play of the period, Graham found junior tight end Adam Moses for his second touchdown pass of the day. Marini tied the game up with what ended up being the final kick of his collegiate career with 14:54 left to play.

W&J seemed to regain its offensive rhythm on the ensuing drive as the Presidents took it all the way down to Waynesburg's two-yard line with a first-and-goal situation. However, the senior-laden Yellow Jacket defense showed its mettle by allowing just one yard on four-straight quarterback runs and forcing a turnover on downs.

Unfortunately, the Jacket offense couldn't take advantage of the big stops and punted the ball back to their opponents. Waynesburg's defense again rose to the occasion by forcing a missed President field goal. With 4:21 showing on the clock, the Jackets drove down to their own 35-yard line before the drive stalled on third down. W&J proceeded to block the possession-ending punt and the Jackets recovered it at their own 14-yard line giving the ball to the Presidents with 2:15 on the clock.

Waynesburg's defense did everything it could to force overtime by backing the Presidents up to the 17-yard line, but the day ended up belonging to the home team as they knocked down the game-winning kick.

Waynesburg ended up out-gaining the Presidents 315-to-272 in total offensive yardage, but three Jacket turnovers, nine penalties for 88 years and the game-clinching blocked punt proved to be too much for the Yellow Jackets to overcome. Graham racked up 269 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 21-of-41 passing. Junior wide receiver Christian Jackson pulled in a team-high seven passes for 103 yards, while Moses and Young pulled in five catches each for 71 and 57 yards, respectively. Falcon tallied a team-high 36 yards on the ground.

Taylor Hockman made the most of his first start of the season for W&J by completing 15-of-24 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 40 yards. Alex Baroffio hauled in a game-high 10 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns.

Waynesburg's defense was paced by senior defensive tackle Darryl Moore, Jr., who piled up a game-high 11 tackles (nine solo), with two tackles for loss and a sack. Senior safety Ryan Williams added nine stops, including five solo tackles.
