Jacket football team ends season in shootout

Junior wide receiver Christian Jackson's eight-catch,153-yard, one touchdown performance wasn't enough to lead Waynesburg to victory in Saturday's ECAC South Atlantic Bowl at Widener University.

Box Score

CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 19) – The 2011 Waynesburg University football season came to an end on Saturday in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Atlantic Bowl against Widener University. The Yellow Jackets stayed right with the high powered Pride offense for over three quarters, but one of the best offenses in the country finally overwhelmed the Waynesburg defense and led Widener to a 48-27 victory.

Waynesburg ends its season at 5-5 overall, while the Pride improved to 9-2 for the season. After a scoreless first quarter, Waynesburg senior quarterback Josh Graham recorded a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to give the visiting Jackets a 14-0 lead. The fifth-year senior found senior wide receiver Jeff Young for a two-yard score with 10:37 to go until halftime to break up the scoreless tie and put his team ahead 7-0. Less than four minutes later, Graham set up a short pass for junior Christian Jackson, who proceeded to take the ball 97 yards for the game's second touchdown. Senior Chris Marini made his second extra point of the day and with 6:15 left to play in the first half, Waynesburg held a 14-0 lead.

However, Widener's offense, which ranked third in Division III going into the contest in scoring at 47.0 points per game, woke up and tied the game at 14-14 with a score before halftime and another touchdown on its opening possession of the second half. Waynesburg regained the lead on its next possession when Graham hooked up with Young on a scoring play for a second time on the day, this time from five yards out, to put the visiting team back ahead at 21-14 with 9:55 to play in the third quarter.

Widener was quick to respond and tied the game at 21-21 on its next possession. However, the Pride wasn't finished as it grabbed its first lead of the afternoon with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter. Waynesburg put together one last scoring drive early in the fourth quarter, which ended with senior running back Jamelle Bowers scampering into the end zone from 18 yards out. Still trailing 28-27 with 13:03 left to play, the Jackets couldn't convert the extra point and the one-point deficit remained on the board. From there, Widener's offense took control of the game and rattled off three unanswered fourth quarter touchdowns to end the game.

Though it came in a loss, Graham set a new personal best with 340 yards passing on 29-of-48 passing. The veteran signal-caller tossed three touchdowns to just one interception in his final collegiate game. As has been the case for most of the year, Graham utilized his three favorite targets to do most of his damage. Junior tight end Adam Moses hauled in a team-high 10 catches for 97 yards, while Jackson led all players with 153 yards on eight grabs. Young chipped in six catches for 76 yards and two scores.

Even though the Waynesburg defense gave up its highest point total since 2009 (49), there were still some outstanding individual efforts to highlight. Senior cornerback Sean Hunt intercepted his fourth and fifth passes of the year, giving him 16 for a collegiate career and tying him for the school career record with Bo Lucas (1988-90). Junior safety Bryan Gary led all tacklers with 10 stops, including eight solo hits.

When the dust settled on the shootout, Waynesburg and Widener combined for 1,025 yards of total offense (810 passing yards) and 50 first downs.
