GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 19) – The Waynesburg University softball team needed just 11 innings to complete a dominant two-game sweep of Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday. After not competing since March 11, the Yellow Jackets (6-4) quickly shook off on any rust and beat the Bobcats (2-6) by the final scores of 15-1 (five innings) and 14-4 (six innings).
After neither team scored in the first inning of game one, the Yellow Jacket bats erupted for eight runs in the top of the second frame. Freshman second baseman Shannon Falleroni landed the first big blow of the inning with a two-run double. She was followed by senior Amanda Baughman who blasted a three-run homer. Senior first baseman Kristen Lautenschlager and freshman right fielder Jasmine Blackwell each drew bases-loaded walks to bring home a run a-piece, and center fielder Amber Pivik went two-for-two in the inning with two runs scored.
UPG responded with a run in the bottom of the second, but that was all the offense that the Bobcats mustered in the game. Waynesburg, meanwhile, tacked on a run in the top of the third and poured on six more in the top of the fifth. Junior third baseman Sam Volponi did half the damage of the inning with a three-run double.
Freshman pitcher Carrie Maier gave a strong performance in the circle to back up the program's biggest offensive output since April 7, 2008 (19 against Franciscan). She gave up just one unearned run on three hits and one walk, while recording six strikeouts.
It took Waynesburg a little longer to put UPG away in game two. Trailing 4-3 after three innings, the Jacket bats reignited for three runs in the top of the fourth. Blackwell and Falleroni both ripped RBI doubles to help push the Jackets ahead 6-4.
That three-spot set Waynesburg on its winning path, which saw the Jackets out-score their opponents 11-0 over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings combined. The Yellow Jackets scored three unearned runs in the fifth, two of which scored on a Falleronie single.
Leading 9-4 heading into the top of the sixth, Waynesburg jumped ahead by 10 runs with a five-spot in the inning. Sophomore catcher Lizz Bombara belted a two-run homer to help put the game away.
Junior pitcher Lauren Minor got the start and worked three innings to pick up the victory. She allowed four runs, but only one earned, on five hits and no walks. Baughman came in to seal up the victory by throwing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. The veteran righty racked up six strikeouts to just two walks on her way to her second save of the year.
Falleroni had a monster day for the Jackets. The freshman from Washington, Pa. went five-for-seven at the plate with two doubles, three runs scored and seven RBI. Baughman, another Washington native, chipped in a five-for-nine outing with a run scored and five more driven in. Overall, seven different Waynesburg hitters recorded multiple hits during the sweep.
Waynesburg is scheduled to return to action on March 24 with a road trip to Cleveland, Ohio. The Jackets will face Case Western Reserve in a double-header that is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
