KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 6) – On a hot and muggy Sunday afternoon, the Waynesburg University softball team opened its 2011 season with a two-game split. The Yellow Jackets took down Emmanuel College 8-0 in game one before falling 3-0 to Point Park University, a scholarship team from the NAIA. Both contests were part of the Rebel Games.
Waynesburg jumped out to an early lead in the first inning of game one thanks to an RBI single by sophomore Rachael Moon that drove in freshman Shannon Falleroni. From there, the Jacket offense exploded for nine hits in the game. Junior Sam Volponi had the big hit of the contest in the top of the third inning, when she smacked a bases-clearing double to the left center gap.
Junior Lauren Minor picked up the win in the circle in game one after throwing five shutout innings.
Senior pitcher Amanda Baughman suffered the loss in game two, despite throwing seven solid innings in which she gave up just five hits and struck out nine. The Jackets gave up all three runs over the first two innings, but settled down from there to hang right with Point Park.
The Yellow Jackets continue their stay at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, March 7, with a double-header slated for 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. against Alverno College and Baldwin-Wallace College, respectively.
