PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 29) – The Waynesburg University softball team needed just ten innings to complete a dominant two-game sweep of Chatham on Friday.

After splitting a double header the night before with Grove City, the Yellow Jackets (14-12) rebounded and beat the Cougars (8-17) by the final scores of 11-1 (five innings) and 8-0 (five innings).

The Jackets set the tone early, breaking out for a six run first inning in game one. Senior centerfielder Amber Pivik landed the first big blow of the inning with a two-run single. She was followed by Samantha Volponi, who reached on an error by the shortstop to drive in a run. Nicole Forte and Shannon Falleroni both also recorded RBIs in the inning.

Waynesburg tacked on a run in the top of the third when freshman Jasmine Blackwell ripped an RBI double to left field. Sophomore first baseman Annastasia Hartnett crushed her first career home run, a three-run shot, to pour on three more runs in the top of the fifth.

Senior pitcher Amanda Baughman picked up the win to improve her record to 5-6. She threw all five innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out six.

It took Waynesburg a little longer to put Chatham away in game two. Scoreless through the first inning, the Jacket bats reignited for five runs in the bottom of the second. Blackwell and Moon both had RBI singles, while Baughman ripped a two-run single.

Lauren Minor picked up the win on the mound in game two, allowing just four hits over five innings for the shutout victory.

Nine different Jackets recorded base-hits in the two-game series, with Hartnett connecting on her first collegiate home run. Amanda Baughman, a Washington native, had a monstrous two games at the plate, going five-for-six with a double, a home-run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Overall, four different Waynesburg hitters recorded multiple hits during the sweep.

Waynesburg is scheduled to return to action tomorrow at home, as they host Geneva College for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
