NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 28) – The Waynesburg University softball team split with Westminster College on Thursday, losing the first game 3-2 while winning the second 6-5.
The Jackets remain at .500 with a 12-12 record, while the Titans improve to 16-12. The Jackets handed the Titans their third loss in conference play this season.
Waynesburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one, as shortstop Rachel Moon scorched a RBI double to left field to score one. Pitcher Amanda Baughman followed Moon's lead with a RBI single of her own.
However, the Titans pitching staff would quiet the Jackets from that point forward, as Waynesburg managed just two hits after the first inning. The Titans would make the score 2-1 in the fifth inning, when a lead-off triple and a subsequent sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game for Westminster.
The Titans would add two more runs in the seventh and final inning, as a walk-off single by second baseman DiAndra DiBacco gave Westminster a game-one win. Amanda Baughman took the loss on the mound, throwing six and a third innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out four.
Westminster would flip the script in game two, as they raced out to an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two. The Jackets offense would answer in the bottom of the third when a Lizz Bombara sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1.
The Jackets went on to score three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead heading into the seventh. Amanda Baughman, who pitched game one, took the mound in game two to pitch a scoreless seventh, and pick up her third save of the season.
Waynesburg looks to start a winning streak on Friday, as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Chatham University in a PAC doubleheader.
