LATROBE, Pa. (April 7) – Superb pitching from both Waynesburg and Saint Vincent dominated the two teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Thursday.

Unfortunately, the Bearcats also got just enough offense to win both games by the final score of 1-0. The losses evened the Yellow Jackets' PAC record to 2-2 and dropped their overall mark to 9-7. Saint Vincent improved to 11-5 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.

The Bearcats walked off with the game-one victory on a two-out RBI triple by second baseman Becky Deane that clinched the win for pitcher Shauna Hetrick.

Waynesburg had an opportunity to break a scoreless tie in the opener when senior pitcher Amanda Baughman singled in to lead off the fifth inning. Pinch runner Brittan Lyle moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Lizz Bombara, putting a runner in scoring position with just one out. Unfortunately, the Jackets couldn't push the go-ahead score across. The only other hit for the visiting team came in the form of a sixth-inning single from junior third baseman Samantha Volponi.

The loss spoiled an outstanding pitching effort from Baughman, who scattered just four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. The senior racked up a season-high10 strikeouts in the early game.

Freshman Carrie Maier tossed another gem for the Jackets in game two, but a run in the fifth was enough for Saint Vincent to squeak out the victory. The first-year lefty gave up seven hits and two walks, while recording three strikeouts. Bearcat pitcher Alyssa Grossman picked up the win in the circle for the home team.

Four Jackets picked up one hit each in game two, including Volponi, who notched her second single of the day.

Waynesburg will try to re-energize their bats on Saturday, when they travel to Greenville for a PAC doubleheader with the Thiel Tomcats. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
