WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – A young Waynesburg University men's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a home match against a traditionally strong Muskingum team under the lights of John F. Wiley Stadium on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets used their speed and aggressiveness to stay right with the Muskies and looked poised to pull an upset. Unfortunately, the visitors were able to strike for a quick second-half goal to pull out a 1-0 victory. The game served as the season-opener for both squads.
The Jackets had several strong scoring opportunities against a stingy Muskingum defense, several of which came from strong-legged freshman
Juan Alvarez, who took four shots on the night, including three on goal. The Muskies picked up the evening's only tally in the 78
th minute of play, ruining an otherwise stellar effort from senior goalkeeper
Ryan Hunsberger, who made four saves on the night.
The Jackets will look to find the back of the net and pick up their first victory of the season on Saturday when the head to Steubenville, Ohio to face off with Franciscan. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
