WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6) – Tuesday night's men's soccer game between Waynesburg and La Roche will go down as one of the most memorable in the history of both programs.
The Yellow Jackets and Redhawks battled through 90 minutes of regulations and nearly two full overtimes with no winner decided. However, with two seconds showing on the clock in the second OT period, La Roche found the back of the net to pull out a 3-2 victory under the cold rainy skies at John F. Wiley Stadium. With the loss, the Jackets dropped to 1-2 overall, while the Red Hawks remained undefeated at 3-0.
At first, it looked as if La Roche would run away with an easy win as the visitors took a 2-0 lead in the 61
st minute. However, Waynesburg showed tremendous resolve and started working its way back into the game. Senior
Erick Burke got the home team on the board with his first goal of the season in the 67
th minute. Less than a minute later, freshman
Nick Brommer took a perfectly placed lob pass from sophomore
Tim Fields and buried the game-tying score early in the 68
th minute.
The game stayed knotted up at 2-2 for the remainder of regulation time and through the first 10-minute overtime period. During the second extra period, emotions ran high on both teams resulting in a confrontation that resulted in a combined two red cards and a yellow card. Just minutes after the incident, La Roche's Bryan Weimerskirch ended the game with his second goal of the night.
Senior
Ryan Hunsberger got the start in net and made nine saves over roughly 110 minutes of competition.
Waynesburg will try to bounce back from the bitter defeat on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Jackets travel to Frederick, Md. to face Hood College.
