Things to Watch For
*- For the second-straight week, Waynesburg's vaunted defense will square off with one of the most potent offensive attacks in the PAC. The Yellow Jackets come into Saturday ranked number one in scoring defense (15.4 ppg), total defense (269.6 ypg) and rushing defense (90.0 ypg). However, the Jackets rank just sixth in pass defense (179.6 ypg). That could be a problem for Waynesburg, as Geneva comes in with the number-one passing offense in the conference (264.7 ypg). The Golden Tornadoes also lead the PAC in scoring (31.7 ppg) and total offense (422.0 ypg).
*- Along with its team offensive success, Geneva boasts arguably the most dynamic player in the PAC and one of the most difficult individuals to defend in the region in junior Rocco Colavecchia. Listed as a quarterback on the Geneva roster, Colavecchia can do a lot of damage as a passer, runner and receiver. He has completed 18-of-38 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns, rushed 113 times for 496 yards (82.7 ypg) and a PAC-best 11 touchdowns and hauled in 24 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns. His 90 points has him comfortably in first place in terms of highest-scoring players in the conference.
*- Speaking of Geneva's offensive weaponry, junior quarterback Zack Hayward is currently ranked number-two in the PAC in passing yardage per game (228.3) and boasts the highest completion percentage in the league (63.1 percent). The third-year standout has completed 130-of-206 attempts for 1,370 yards and 10 touchdowns, while being intercepted just four times.
*- As it has done all year, Waynesburg will lean on its potent rushing attack, which ranks first in the PAC at 200.1 yards per game, which is over 25 yards per game better than second-place Grove City (175.0 ypg). The ground game is led by a pair of top-seven running backs, junior
Bertrand Ngampa and senior
Dominic Moore. Ngampa is fourth in the PAC with 72.9 yards per game, while Moore ranks seventh in the conference with a 68.3 ypg. The two backs feature very different running styles. Ngampa leads all rushers in the league's top 10 with a 6.0 ypc average, while Moore has rushed 129 times, which is the second-highest total on the list.
*- Speaking of Ngampa, he put together one of the top performances of his three-year collegiate career during Saturday's 23-21 win at Bethany. The Fairfax, Va. native led a Waynesburg running game that piled up 325 yards in its 23-21 come-from-behind win over the Bison. Ngampa set a career high for rushing yards with 206 on 19 carries. He also scored two touchdowns, one of which was a 53-yarder in the second quarter. For his efforts, Ngampa was lauded as both the PAC and ECAC Division III Southwest Offensive Player of the Week.
*- Along with its defense and running game, Waynesburg's special teams play has been another big reason for its 7-0 start to 2012. Not only is senior
Zack Rogers continuing to lead the PAC in punting (39.9 yards per punt), but senior
Christian Jackson is also still on top of the conference kick return listings (34.5 ypr), and second in punt return average (9.1 ypr).
*- While the Jackets boast arguably the best punter and returner in the conference, Geneva has the top kicker in the PAC in senior Brian Visingardi. The veteran standout is the top scoring kicker in the league (36 points on 18-20 PAT's and six-of-nine field goals), and is the reigning PAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Visingardi connected on all six kick attempts (three field goals and three extra points) during Geneva's 30-22 win over Saint Vincent.
*- While most of Saturday's focus will be on the two offenses, both teams' defenses feature a top-notch tackler. Geneva junior linebacker Dillon Goodell ranks second in the PAC with 10.3 tackles per game, while Waynesburg junior defensive back
Bryan Gary comes in with the fifth-highest average (9.7 tpg). His 68 total tackles rank second in the conference. Team-wise, there is a noticeable difference in the opponents' defensive numbers. While Waynesburg leads the conference in several categories, Geneva comes in ranked eighth in scoring defense (36.2 ppg) and total defense (351.1 ypg).
*- Saturday will serve as homecoming for the Golden Tornadoes. Ironically, these same two teams met up for Waynesburg's 2011 homecoming game, which the Jackets won by the final score of 47-33.
