Women's soccer notches huge PAC win

Yellow Jackets hand W&J its first conference loss of the season

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 19) – Last year, the Waynesburg University women' soccer team pulled off a monumental upset in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) players, when it beat Washington & Jefferson, which was the two-time defending PAC champion at the time, 1-0. On Friday night, the Yellow Jackets proved that 2011 was no fluke as they handed the Presidents their first conference loss of the season by downing their opponents 1-0 for a second-straight year.

The win moved Waynesburg (9-6-1, 5-1-1) into second place in the PAC standings and dropped W&J (9-6-1, 5-1-1) into third place. The Yellow Jackets scored the game's only goal in the 30th minute of play, when junior sophomore Erica Nordlund managed to gain control of a loose ball in front of the net and tapped it over to junior Susie Godwin, who fired in the score.

Godwin's third goal of the season was just enough offense for the home team, who got a fantastic effort from its defense and freshman goalkeeper Ciara Scott. Not only did Scott make five saves over 90 minutes of play to notch her seventh shutout of the season, but Waynesburg defenders made two crucial saves, when it appeared as though the Presidents would be able to tie the game up with a goal of their own.

The Yellow Jackets picked up the victory despite being outshot 15-to-nine and being on the short end of a nine-to-three differential in corner kicks. Prior to and during the thrilling conference battle, the Jacket women raised money for Pancreatic Cancer research and development with its annual Kick Pancreatic Cancer event. Waynesburg will go for its third-straight PAC win on Thursday, Oct. 24, when the Jackets travel to Bethany for a 1 p.m. meeting.
