PAINESVILLE, Ohio (Nov. 17) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team squared off against three quality opponents at a quad-match hosted by Division II Lake Erie College on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets went 0-3 in their three matches.

Waynesburg (0-4) nearly got its day off to a good start against York College (5-3). The Yellow Jackets led heading into their heavyweight match against the Spartans, but a York pin was the deciding factor in 22-15 Jacket loss.

After the Spartans built up 12-0 lead with wins at 125, 133 and 141 pounds, sophomore Chris Milligan got Waynesburg on the board with an 8-4 win at 149 pounds. Junior Sam Lombardo got a very successful day rolling with a 7-5 triumph at 157 to cut the Spartan lead down to 12-6. Sophomore Sam Guidi kept the wins coming with a 6-4 decision at 165 and junior Anthony Bonaventura tied the match at 12-12 with an 8-4 decision.

Senior 184-pounder Cody Catalina gave Waynesburg its first and only lead of the day with a hard-fought 2-1 victory to put the Jackets up 15-12. Unfortunately, York regained the lead with a major decision win at 197, before the contest-clinching fall.

Session two of the day saw Waynesburg square off against the host Storm, which jumped out to a 15-0 lead after four weight classes. Lombardo picked up his second win of the day, this one by major decision, to make the score 15-4. Unfortunately, the Jackets wouldn't win again until Catalina picked up his second decision victory at 184. Lake Erie took the final two weight classes to record a 30-7 victory.

Waynesburg's day ended with another talented Division II team from the state of Ohio in Tiffin. The Jackets found themselves in another deep hole, trailing 12-0 after the first four weights. This time, it was junior Luke Lohr, who broke his team out of its early skid. After missing all but one match with an injury last year, Lohr seemed ready to go for the 2012-13 campaign by picking up his team's only pin, sticking Zach Tiell in 5:20. Lombardo moved up to 165 pounds to make room for Lohr and completed a 3-0 day after pulling out a 4-3 decision.

After the Dragons got back to their winning ways at 174 pounds, Catalina gutted a 4-3 decision of his own at 184 to finish up a 3-0 day and pull the Jackets to within three points of Tiffin at 15-12. However, the Dragons became the only team at the event to go 3-0 thanks to a major decision at 197 and a win by disqualification at heavyweight to wrap up the 25-12 win.

After competing in four-straight duals, three coming against strong Division II opposition, Waynesburg returns to tournament competition on Saturday, Dec. 1, with a trip to the Ohio Northern Invitational. The Jackets are expecting to finally have their full starting lineup for the event as junior heavyweight Brandon Fedorka completed a 10-1 season on Saturday with the Jacket football team. Along with being a former Division III national qualifier as a freshman, Fedorka is also a two-time All-Presidents' Athletic Conference defensive end.
