WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 10) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team will go for its third-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) title tonight at Washington & Jefferson starting at 5 p.m.
Last year, the Yellow Jackets took the team championship by a comfortable 39-point margin over second-place Thiel. However, this year's event is expected by many to be a much tighter affair, similar to the Jackets' first championship, which wasn't decided until a decision win at heavyweight by then-senior Melvin Warrick in the final bout of the night. The Jackets edged Thiel 105.5 to 101 in 2010 for their first-ever PAC title.
Waynesburg returns three PAC champions from last year in junior 125-pounder
Alex Crown, senior 157-pounder
Garett Johnston and junior 184-pounder
Cody Catalina. Thiel brings back defending 133-pound champ Corey Brown, 165-pound champion Matt Lowry and heavyweight champ Will Ringer. The host Presidents will look to crown a brand new champion as they return no 2011 title winners.
Waynesburg and Thiel, which have combined to win the last 12 team crowns, are expected to be the front-runners again this season and the battle for the title should be a tight one. One needs only to look at the result of their annual dual match, which took place on Feb. 1 in Greenville. Sophomore Jacket heavyweight
Brandon Fedorka's 1-0 win over Ringer tied the match at 17-17 and Waynesburg took the win on tie-breaker criteria 2 (most wins by fall), thanks to Johnston's pin of Ryan Carson.
W&J lost to both Waynesburg and Thiel this year, but the Presidents will send several talented grapplers, particularly in the middle weights, to the mat and will play a big role in who walks away with this year's championships. W&J seniors Taylor Potts (285) and Zach Cecchetti (133), both 2009 PAC champions, as well as sophomores Josh Etzel (141) and David Dibenedetto (165) should all be in the mix at their respective weights.
