WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a seven-inning doubleheader with NAIA opponent Carlow University on Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets won their sixth-straight game in the opener after downing the Celtics 3-1, but that winning streak came to an end in the late game after the Jackets lost a slim lead and fell 2-1. Waynesburg is now 11-7 on the season, while Carlow's record moves to 17-6 for the year.

The home team opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning that came off an RBI single from freshman first baseman Haley Payne. Both teams struggled to get their respective bats going over the next four innings until Carlow tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. However, the Jackets didn't wait long to respond as freshman Shelby Tabrosky came up with a pinch-hit, two-run single that put the home team ahead 3-1 going into the seventh inning.

Waynesburg starting pitcher Carrie Maier shut the Celtics down in the seventh to preserve the 3-1 victory. Maier worked all seven innings and scattered nine hits to grab the victory. The sophomore racked up six strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.

Game two started in a similar fashion to the opener as Waynesburg took an early lead when sophomore Ashley Clarke doubled in the game's first run to put her team up 1-0 in the second inning. Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to add to their run total and the Celtics posted a run in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh to seal up the victory.

Freshman Jenn Lingg started and gave up four hits over four shutout innings before turning the ball over to fellow freshman Lindsay Palarino, who suffered the loss.

Sophomore catcher Madison Presto led the Waynesburg offense by going three-for-six at the dish with three singles.

With the Jackets' early-season non-conference schedule wrapped up, the Yellow Jackets can now prepare for Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, which gets started on Saturday, March 31, with a seven-inning doubleheader at Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
