Baldwin-Wallace Box Score
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 5) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a pair of contests at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. on Monday. The Yellow Jackets stormed past Presentation (S.D.) by the final score of 8-3, and out-hit Baldwin-Wallace, a 2011 Division III national qualifier, in game two, but fielding issues caused the Jackets to suffer a 4-0 loss.
Waynesburg (2-2) jumped on Presentation early and often in its win, scoring a run in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third and another score in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead 7-0 before the Saints broke up the shutout try with two runs in the top of the sixth frame. Already up 7-2, the Jackets tacked on their final run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-2.
Sophomore leftfielder
Jasmine Blackwell put together a big day at the plate, going two-for-two with her second homerun of the season, three runs scored and two RBI. Blackwell reached base a third time when she was hit by a pitch and a fourth when she walked. Just to complete a fine all-round game, she also stole two bases.
Junior shortstop
Rachael Moon, senior DP
Samantha Volponi, freshman first baseman
Haley Payne, freshman third baseman Ashley Clarke and sophomore right fielder
Jenna Dorazio picked up two hits each on the day. Sophomore second baseman
Shannon Falleroni joined Blackwell with a game-high two RBI, while Payne scored a pair of runs.
While Waynesburg's bats were out-performing their counterparts 16-to-12, sophomore pitcher
Carrie Maier was mowing down batters at an impressive rate. The second-year hurler racked up a personal-best 14 strikeouts, while walking just one batter and giving up three earned runs.
The Jackets continued to produce at the plate against Baldwin-Wallace, but they were unable to come up with big hits in key scoring situations and were hurt by five errors. Waynesburg out-hit the Yellow Jackets by an eight-to-four margin and looked primed to take an early lead when the Orange and Black put runners on second and third with one out in the second, but were unable to push a run across home plate.
Moon had another strong performance at the plate, recording two singles in three trips to the plate. Freshman
Haley Payne started and suffered the loss in the circle after giving up three runs, all earned, on just two hits, five walks and two strikeouts.
After getting tomorrow off, the Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 7, with games against St. Benedict (Minn.) and SUNY Cortland.
