WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 12) – The Waynesburg University softball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)  wins of the season on Thursday, defeating Saint Vincent College in a home doubleheader by the scores of 5-4 and 4-3.

The Yellow Jackets' overall record jumped up to 13-13, 2-6 in the PAC, while the Bearcats fell to 17-11, 6-2 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent drew first in game one- getting out to 2-0 lead off of Waynesburg starting pitcher Carrie Maier in the top of the third. The Jackets weren't phased, as Rachel Moon's double to left center scored Jasmine Blackwell to make the score 2-1 in the bottom half of that inning.

After Maier pitched her way through a scoreless top of the fourth, Waynesburg's bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning thanks in part to two consecutive errors by the Bearcats defense. Waynesburg found themselves with the bases loaded and Jasmine Blackwell at the plate. Blackwell, already 1-for-1 on the day, ripped a triple all the way to the wall that scored three runners and gave the Jackets a 4-2 lead.

The Bearcats struck again in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs, the second of which came on a passed ball to tie the score at 4-4.

Coming into the contest, the Jackets were no strangers to close contests; nine of their previous 24 games were decided by one run.  With that in mind, Waynesburg went to work in the bottom half of the seventh inning with freshman Haley Payne leading things off with a single through the left side.

Sophomore Madison Presto followed up Payne with a base hit of her own, giving the Jackets two runners on and no outs.  Ashley Clark roped a pitch to right field as pinch-runner Emily Sorton came around to score to give the Jackets their third home walk-off win of the season.

Clark finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Blackwell led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Waynesburg's starting pitcher Carrie Maier threw all seven innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, walking two batters and striking out one.
Game two was more of a pitchers duel between the two squads as Waynesburg freshman Jenn Ling outdueled sophomore Ally Vrcek to pick up the win in the circle for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets, who served as the visiting team in the contest, found themselves in a 3-0 hole after three innings of play.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fifth, Waynesburg erupted for a three run inning thanks to a Rachel Moon RBI single up the middle and a Haley Payne two-run double to right center.

From there, Ling continued to baffle the Bearcats hitters as she went the distance for the complete game victory, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three.

Seven different Waynesburg hitters recorded hits in game two, as Jasmine Blackwell hit .571 (4-for-7) for the doubleheader, collecting a double, a triple, three RBI's and two runs scored.

The Jackets will look to build upon their sweep as they are on the road, taking on Grove City on Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
