GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 14) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Grove City on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets dropped game one of the twin-bill by the final score of 3-0 before rebounding with a 4-3 triumph in the late contest. With the split, the Jackets are now 14-14 overall and 3-7 in PAC play. Grove City moved to 15-17 for the season and 3-7 in conference action.
Waynesburg managed just two hits in the opener, but still had an outstanding scoring opportunity in the fifth inning when the Jackets put two runners on with one out and loaded the bases with two outs on the board. Unfortunately, the visiting team wasn't able to push a run across. Grove City posted all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth, when the Wolverines connected on three of their four hits.
Waynesburg sophomore pitcher
Carrie Maier was almost unhittable outside of the sixth frame. Maier gave up four hits, three of which came in the sixth, and three walks, while also striking out three Wolverines.
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead before the Jackets rebounded with their first run of the day in the bottom of the third, thanks in large part to a pair of GCC errors. The Wolverines regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Jackets tied the game back up (3-3) in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore
Shannon Falleroni walked with the bases loaded. The game-deciding run came in the bottom of the seventh when senior designated player Sam Volponi singled in freshman third baseman
Ashley Clark for a walk-off base hit.
Maier scored the win in the circle during game two after giving up five hits and a walk in 6.2 innings of work. Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, April 17, when the Jackets play host to Thiel for a PAC double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
