WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University softball team managed to score just two runs on six hits over two games, but the Yellow Jackets still managed split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Thiel on Tuesday afternoon.
'
The Jackets (15-15, 4-8) managed to make a first-inning run hold up over seven innings of defense-filled softball in a 1-0 victory during the opening game. Things didn't go as well for the home team during the late game as the Tomcats (12-16, 7-5) scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 10-1 win that lasted just five innings.

Back-to-back singles by sophomore leftfielder Jasmine Blackwell and sophomore second baseman Shannon Falleroni followed by a groundout junior shortstop Rachael Moon put two runners in scoring position with just one out on the board. Freshman first baseman Haley Payne's groundout to shortstop produced the only run of the game as Blackwell came in to score.

That was enough offense for sophomore pitcher Carrie Maier, who led her team to its first shutout win of the season. The second-year starter worked all seven innings and gave up just four hits, all singles, and a walk, while also picking up four strikeouts. Maier allowed just one batter to advance into scoring position.

Game two was a much different story as Thiel jumped out early and never let up as the Tomcats followed up their six-run first with two scores in the second and two more in the third to jump ahead 10-0. Waynesburg was not only in danger of being shut out, but also giving up a no-hitter before freshman centerfielder Emily Sorton tripled down the right field line to score sophomore Jenny Feightner, who walked in the previous at-bat.

Freshman Jenn Lingg started and took the loss after facing four batters and not recording an out. Maier came back out on to the field and worked four innings in which she gave up six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits and a walk.

Waynesburg will look to do one game better than its Tuesday split when it travels to Bethany to face the reigning PAC champions on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
