BETHANY, W.Va. (April 22) – The Waynesburg University softball team scored an 8-0 five-inning victory over the defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions from Bethany as part of a two-game split on Sunday. The Bison bounced back to take game two 2-0.

The win in game one snapped Waynesburg's (16-16, 5-9) three-game losing streak to the home team (8-23, 5-9) and featured one of the Jackets' top all-around efforts of the year. Waynesburg out-hit Bethany 10-to-two and allowed just two Bison runners to reach scoring position.

The Jackets got all the offense they needed in the top of the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Jasmine Blackwell led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a throwing error to make it 1-0 Waynesburg. Freshman first baseman Haley Payne connected on a two-out double and sophomore DP Madison Presto followed with a walk. Freshman third baseman Ashley Clark brought both of her teammates home with a bases-clearing double that made the score 3-0 Jackets.

Waynesburg doubled its advantage in the top of the second inning when sophomore second baseman Shannon Falleroni singled in freshman Jess Gavin and Payne followed two batter later with a two-run double that scored Falleroni and junior shortstop Rachael Moon.

Already up 6-0, the visiting team put the final touches on the victory with a run in the fourth and a final tally in the fifth. Waynesburg's biggest offensive output of the conference season was backed up by an outstanding pitching effort from sophomore Carrie Maier, who gave up just two hits over a five-inning complete game. She walked one and struck out one

Maier put together another solid pitching effort in game two, but didn't get the same offensive backing as in the opener. The righty allowed seven hits, but gave up just two runs, both of which came in the third inning. Waynesburg had several strong opportunities to get on the board, but was unable to cash in. The Yellow Jackets put two runners in scoring position with one out on the board in both the second and fifth innings, but couldn't push a run across home plate.

Falleroni and Clark led Waynesburg at the plate during the 1-1 afternoon by both going three-for-six. Payne, Blackwell and sophomore right fielder added two runs each on the day. Maier's final numbers saw her go 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out two Bison hitters.

The Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 24, when they host Chatham for their final home doubleheader of the season. Waynesburg will celebrate senior day against the Cougars and first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
