WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University softball team concluded the home portion of its 2012 season by splitting a senior-day doubleheader with Chatham University on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets weren't able to send the seniors out on a winning note in game one, as they dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker. Waynesburg followed that with a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the late contest to salvage a split.
Waynesburg (17-17, 6-10) got a stellar effort from sophomore starting pitcher
Carrie Maier in the opener. She gave up just two earned runs on six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three Cougars (11-21, 3-13). Chatham took an early 1-0 lead and maintained its advantage for the majority of the remainder of the game. The Jackets finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when senior third baseman Sam Volponi crushed a double to center field to get the inning started. After fellow senior Jamie Gillum bunted the runner to third, sophomore outfielder
Jasmine Blackwell hit a ball deep to center field, scoring the runner from third and tying the game 1-1.
The Cougars regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning and never relinquished the advantage on their way to the win.
Volponi had two of the Jackets' five hits in the early game, going two-for-three with a double.
In game two, Chatham once again got out to a quick lead, by tacking on the first run of the game in the first inning.. The Cougars scored three more runs to go ahead 4-0, before the Jackets finally answered in the top sixth, when sophomore second baseman
Shannon Falleroni hit a double to right center, scoring Blackwell from first and making the score 4-1.
Waynesburg got into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Maier entered game two in relief of freshman pitcher
Jenn Lingg and forced the Cougars to strand two runners on the bases and preserve hoe of a win.
The Jackets rewarded Maier's efforts by loading the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh inning for Blackwell, who came through with a bases-clearing double to right-center field that tied the score at 4-4. Eventually the PAC matchup moved into extra innings, where Waynesburg was able to pull out the victory.
It wasn't until the top of the 10
th inning that either team strung any offense together, as junior shortstop
Rachael Moon connected on her first hit of the game, a double to center field that scored Blackwell for the second time and gave the Jackets a 5-4 lead.
Chatham looked as though it may have been able to extend the game even further after putting runners on first and second base with no outs. Maier threw out the lead runner at third on a ground ball and Moon made a diving grab on a hard hit line drive that she turned into a double play to snatch away the win.
CMaier picked up the win in relief, throwing five and one-third innings, during which she allowed just one hit, one walk and no earned runs. Blackwell powered the Waynesburg offense by going three-for-six with two runs scored and four RBI.
The Jackets will finish up the 2012 regular season on the road when they travel to Washington and Jefferson on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
