Women's soccer opens 2012 with a win

Yellow Jackets get two goals each from Augustine and Abraham in 6-1 triumph

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 31) – The Carl Griffiths era got off to a fantastic start on a warm, sunny evening at John F. Wiley Stadium as the Waynesburg women's soccer team rolled to a 6-1 win over Franciscan  University on Friday.

The first goal of the Yellow Jackets' (1-0) 2012 season came off the foot of standout junior Taylor Augustine who took a feed from sophomore Natalie Abraham and beat Baron keeper Lauren Koath after 15:55 of play in the first half. The duo hooked up again, but reversed their roles less than four minutes later as Augustine assisted on Abraham's first tally of the year.

After Franciscan (0-1) posted its only score of the day to trim the Jackets' lead to 2-1, the home team rebounded and put the game away with two more first-period goals. Senior Karen Moyer tallied an unassisted goal after 38:44 had ticked off the game clock, and junior Missy Coleman followed a few minutes later to build Waynesburg's lead up to 4-1, which was the score at halftime.

The home team put the final touches on its opening day win with goals by Augustine and Abraham, who scored in the 65th and 79th minutes, respectively. Sophomore Kirsten Miller assisted on Auigustine's second score of the day, while fellow sophomore Becky Hotek set up Abraham.

Along with Griffith winning his Waynesburg debut, freshman Ciara Scott got the start in goal and made a pair of saves to go to 1-0 for her collegiate career. The Jackets out-shot the Barons 19-8 for the game.

After giving its home crowd of around 200 fans a good show, the Yellow Jackets will play their next four games on the road, the first of which comes on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Pitt-Greensburg. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
