Jacket gridders drop Saint Vincent 35-14

Waynesburg opens 2012 PAC schedule with impressive road win

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The Waynesburg University football team carried its strong non-conference play into Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Saturday at Saint Vincent College. Senior quarterback Tyler Fatigante continued his early-season improvement and the Jacket running attack went over 200 yards for a third-straight game as the visiting Yellow Jackets downed the Bearcats 35-14 at Chuck Noll Field.

Things started out slowly for the Jackets (3-0, 1-0) and the Cats (0-3, 0-1) as the two teams failed to score after a quarter of play. However, the visitors broke up the scoreless tie during their first possession of the second period when Fatigante connected on a three-yard touchdown pass to senior All-American tight end Adam Moses to cap a nine-play, 53-yard possession. After junior Alex Henry knocked through his first extra point of the day, Waynesburg found itself with a 7-0 advantage.

Unfortunately, the lead was a short one as Saint Vincent's Darius Brown took the ensuing kickoff and sprinted 96 yards for the game-tying touchdown. Brown's electric play gave Saint Vincent a big shot of momentum, but the Jackets were able to regain control of the conference clash on its very next drive and never looked back as they scored 28 unanswered points to pull well out of reach of the Green and Yellow.

After Brown's touchdown-scoring return, Waynesburg began its next drive at its own 18-yard line. Senior running back Dominic Moore quickly got his team out of the shadow of its own goalposts with a 17-yard run. Fatigante hooked up with Moses on the second play of the possession for 15 more yards to give the Jackets the ball at midfield. From there, the visiting team slowly worked its way through the Bearcat half of the field before Fatigante pounded in a one-yard rushing touchdown to give his team the lead back at 13-7. Henry connected on another PAT try to make the score 14-7 Jackets.

Waynesburg's special teams made up for their lapse on the kick return for a touchdown by blocking a punt on the ensuing Bearcat possession that gave the offense the ball at the Saint Vincent 22-yard line. Three plays later, Fatigante drilled a 13-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Bernie Thompson for the eventual game-winning touchdown to cap the short possession. Another Henry kick was true and Waynesburg held a 21-7 advantage with just over a minute to go until the end of the second quarter.

The halftime break didn't slow down the Jacket momentum as Waynesburg scored on its first possession of the third quarter in typical, methodical fashion. The 10-play, 72-yard march lasted 6:20 and featured seven rushing plays and three completions from Fatigante on three attempts. The last of those three passes went to senior Christian Jackson for a 13-yard touchdown with just over 8:30 left to play in the third quarter. Henry booted in his fourth PAT of the afternoon and the Jackets' lead ballooned to 28-7.

The Bearcats managed to keep their opponents off the board for the remainder of the third quarter, but Waynesburg put the bow on a solid victory during its opening drive of the fourth. After Jackson took a short SVC punt and ran it back to the Bearcat one-yard line, Moore picked up all three feet of the very short possession on his way to the end zone to cap the Jacket scoring. After Henry completed another perfect day of kicking extra points, Waynesburg found itself up 35-7 with around 14 minutes left to play. Saint Vincent managed a late score with less than a minute to play in the ball game, but it was too little, too late as the Jackets left the field victorious.

For a second-straight week, Fatigante put together an efficient all-around offensive game. He also posted his first turnover-free effort of the season after he completed an impressive 14-of-15 pass attempts for 138 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. The senior signal caller also rushed nine times for 55 yards and a fourth score.

Speaking of running the ball, Moore posted his first collegiate 100-yard rushing game with a game-high 101 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. As a team, the Jackets piled up 206 yards rushing, while the Waynesburg defense stifled the Bearcats to the tune of just 35 yards on the ground.

Moses had his biggest game of the 2012 season by pulling in a game-high seven catches for a contest-best 72 yards and his second touchdown of the year.

The Waynesburg defense barely had time to put together any impressive numbers as they were only on the field for 44 plays. Senior linebacker Jordan Helmick paced all Jacket defenders with five total tackles, four of which were solo stops. Six different Waynesburg defenders picked up a tackle for loss each, while four of those stops in the backfield were sacks.

As a team, Waynesburg out-gained Saint Vincent 344-to-229 in total offensive yardage and the Jackets recorded 19 first downs to the Bearcats' 10. The visitors were also much better on third down, converting on six-of-12 tries, while holding the opposition to just three-of-11 on third down. The Jacket win on Saturday avenged last year's heart-breaking last-second 17-14 setback to SVC in Waynesburg.

The Yellow Jackets, who are the only 3-0 team in the PAC, won't be able to enjoy their latest win for very long as they return home to John F. Wiley Stadium to host the four-time defending conference champions from Thomas More. Last year, the Jackets upset then-sixth ranked Thomas More 26-23. Kickoff for the 2012 meeting of the two squads is set for 1:30 p.m.
