Women's soccer drops road match to La Roche

Yellow Jackets came up just short in 4-3 battle with Redhawks

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 27) – The good news about Tuesday's women's soccer match at La Roche was that Waynesburg University broke out of a three-match skid in which it failed to score a goal. Unfortunately, the Redhawks' offense was just a little bit better than their opponents as La Roche pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Jackets.

Waynesburg (4-5) took the early lead on the day when sophomore Kirsten Miller scored just 17 seconds into the contest off an assist from sophomore Natalie Abraham. The Jacket lead lasted a little longer than 14 minutes before La Roche (4-5-1) tied the game at 1-1. The visiting team regained the advantage over its opposition when junior Susie Godwin took a feed from sophomore Taylor Bombalski off a free kick during the 35th minute of action.

La Roche was once again able to tie the game up, this time in the 38th minute of the first half. With the score knotted up at 2-2 going into halftime, the Redhawks took their first lead of the game five minutes into the second period. The Jackets wasted little time in erasing the deficit as Abraham fired in her team-leading sixth goal of 2012, which was assisted on by Miller. Unfortunately, the day belonged to the home team as it scored the game-deciding goal in the 68th minute of play off a corner kick.

Waynesburg suffered the loss, despite a sizeable margin in shots (25-to-five) and corner kicks (13-to-two). Freshman Ciara Scott started in net and played all 90 minutes of the loss. The Jackets will look to end their current four-match losing streak on Saturday, when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) with a road match at Chatham. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

NOTE: The Waynesburg men were scheduled to play after the women wrapped up their matchup, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
