WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Jan. 12) – After battling through three tough matches during the first day of the Budd Whitehill Division III Wrestling Duals on Friday, the Waynesburg wrestling team enjoyed a much less stressful day on the mats during day two on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets faced off with the host grapplers from Lycoming College and won eight of 10 bouts, including the final seven, to roll to a 33-9 victory over the Warriors.
The win gave the Jackets a 2-2 record at the two-day event, and improved their overall dual record to 3-7. Lycoming fell to 4-5 for the year.
Freshman 125-pounder
Gordan Bieber won his third match of the two-day event, all by decision, with a 2-1 triumph over Cody Barbiche to put his team ahead 3-0. After the Jackets were once again forced to forfeit at 133 pounds because of several wrestlers falling ill with flu-like symptoms, the Warriors took a 6-3 advantage. That lead grew to 9-3 after a Lycoming win at 141.
That was the last victory for the host team, as the Jackets won seven-straight bouts to close out the day. Sophomore
Chris Milligan pulled his team to within three points (9-6) with a 3-2 victory at 149 pounds. Junior
Sam Lombardo gave Waynesburg the lead back with a 14-3 major decision that made the match score 10-9.
Sophomore
Sam Guidi concluded arguably the best run of any Jacket at the Whitehill Duals by scoring his first pin of the tournament, which he accomplished in 4:24. It was Guidi's fourth win in four bouts. Already leading 16-9, junior 174-pounder
Anthony Bonaventura tacked on four more team points with a 16-3 major decision triumph.
Senior 184-pounder
Cody Catalina was the next Jacket to taste victory, which he did thanks to a hard-fought 5-4 decision win. First-year senior 197-pounder
Travis Kuhn won his second match by major decision at the tournament after beating Nik Christine 15-5. Senior heavyweight
Marty Kisla closed things out in style with a pin in 3:39.
Despite not having one of its top wrestlers in senior 133-pounder
Alex Crown, who was so stricken by his illness that he had to default out of his first match of the tournament while holding a commanding 14-0 lead, Waynesburg was still able to overcome four forfeits at 133 to go .500 at the duals. Two big reasons for the success were Guidi and Catalina, who both posted perfect 4-0 records for the event.
Bieber and Kisla added 3-1 marks over the two days of competition, including a 1-0 win for Kisla that clinched a Waynesburg win over Trine. Kuhn went a perfect 2-0, while splitting time with sophomore
Patrick Jennings at 197.
After wrestling four matches in two days, the Jackets will take most of the upcoming to rest, get healthy and prepare for another tough dual match. Waynesburg will travel to ninth-ranked Ithaca to face the Bombers on Friday, Jan. 18. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
