WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team battled visiting Westminster for 110 physical minutes under frigid conditions at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday night. After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown.
The Yellow Jackets (9-3-2, 2-2-1) opened the scoring in the ninth minute of competition, when
Tim Fields, who was one of five Waynesburg standouts being honored on senior night, found the back of the net on a high, floating ball that snuck past the Titan (7-8-2, 2-2-2) keeper in the ninth minute of play. The Jackets maintained their one-goal lead until the second half, when Westminster scored on a breakaway in the 64
th minute. After neither squad was able to score over the final 26 minutes of action, the game advanced into the first overtime period.
Both teams attempted five shots over the 20 minutes of extra time, but neither found the back of the net to break up the tie. Waynesburg forced the tie despite being outshot by a considerable 36-to-13 margin. However, the Titans held a much smaller 11-to-seven edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Brandon Daughtry played a big role in the draw by making 10 saves on the night.
Waynesburg will look to snap out of a three-game winless streak on Saturday, Oct. 26, when the Jackets travel Washington & Jefferson to face the Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
