WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 30) – There were plenty of shots flying through the cool night air at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday night. Those shots were coming from the Waynesburg University and Geneva College men's soccer teams, which squared off in an important Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. After all was said and done, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw.
Geneva (7-7-3, 3-3-1) opened up the scoring during the 16
th minute of competition. Waynesburg (9-4-3, 2-3-2) responded with a junior
Cody Lemke burying his sixth goal of the season after 34:32 of play. The score remained tied at 1-1 when the two squads retreated to their respective locker rooms at half time.
The Golden Tornadoes regained a one-score lead (2-1) following a tally in the 58
th minute of action, and was in position to pick up the win. The Jackets, however, were in no mood to give up, and junior
Colin Nelson knotted things back up at 2-2 before the game was eventually sent into extra periods. Geneva out-shot Waynesburg 11-to-five over the final 20 minutes of play, but three saves from junior goalkeeper
Brandon Daughtry denied the visitors the game-winning goal.
A total of 56 combined shots were unleashed by the two conference opponents, with the Tornadoes rattling off 29 of them. However, Waynesburg held the edge in shots on goal (17-to-13). Daughtry racked up 11 saves in the draw.
After settling for the tie, the Jackets trail Geneva for the fourth-and-final playoff spot with one game left to play. The Yellow Jackets wrap up their regular season schedule on Friday, Nov. 1, with a trip to Saint Vincent College, while Geneva plays its final match at home against Bethany. Waynesburg's matchup with the Bearcats is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
