WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 5) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team celebrated homecoming by hosting Marietta and Geneva for a tri-match at the Yellow Jackets' home courts. The Jackets scored a big Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Geneva before dispatching of Marietta. Both matches were decided by identical 5-4 final scores.
Waynesburg (8-4, 5-3) got off to a fast start against Geneva (8-4, 5-3) by claiming victory at first and second doubles. Sophomore
Rachel Klemash teamed up with junior
Alyssa Daniel to pick up an impressive 8-1 win over their opponents. Senior
Markie Gustafson and sophomore
Sarah Reyes put the home team ahead 2-0 with their 8-5 triumph at the number-two spot. Geneva avoided the sweep with a win at third doubles.
After the two teams moved to singles competition, the Yellow Jackets took flights two, three and four to seal up the victory. Following a win by the Golden Tornadoes at the number-one spot, Daniel took a thrilling 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision at second singles, and was followed by Gustafson's impressive 6-1, 6-1 win at the number-three spot. Reyes scored the deciding triumph at the number-five position in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
The Jackets had a shot for two more singles victories, but junior
Madison DuBrock fell in a three-set match at fifth singles, while classmate
Lauren Cowden suffered a disappointing 7-5, 7-6 setback at the number-six spot.
Waynesburg's match against Marietta (0-3) was played in a shortened eight-game, pro-set format. Each singles contest lasted just one set to eight game victories, much like a doubles match.
The Yellow Jacket doubles teams again carried the host team to victory by taking two-of-three from the Pioneers. Daniel and Klemash won 8-3 at first doubles, before Cowden and DuBrock combined for an 8-3 victory at the number-three spot.
After Marietta scored wins at first and second singles, Waynesburg fired back with three-straight triumphs to seal up the victory. Gustafson won 8-2 at third singles and was followed by Reyes, who won
8-1 at the number-four spot. Waynesburg's second victory of the day was clinched when sophomore
Rachel Wilson gutted out an 8-6 final at fifth singles.
After picking wins number four and five in a row on Saturday, the Jackets are scheduled to wrap up PAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with a home match against Washington & Jefferson. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
