WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened up the home portion of its schedule with a tri-match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The 12
th-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated York College (Pa.) 24-15, before falling to Mercyhurst, which is ranked 20
th in the country in Division II, 36-6.
The Jackets (1-2) got off to strong start in their win against the Spartans (0-3), thanks to sophomore 125-pounder
Gordan Bieber, who scored a 9-5 win over Thomas Gatinella to put the host team up 3-0. York tied the match at 3-3 following a win at 133 pounds, but that loss preceded back-to-back Waynesburg victories.
Junior 141-pounder
Jake Vitolo defeated Nicholast Gatinella 8-2 to give his team the lead back at 6-3. Junior
Shane Foster doubled Waynesburg's advantage to 9-3 after downing John Allenson 9-6 at 149 pounds.
York tied the match at 9-9 with a pin at 157, but three-straight Jacket triumphs gave the home squad the lead for good. Junior 165-pounder
Sam Guidi picked up Waynesburg's only pin of the day in 1:54 to make the score 15-9. Senior
Anthony Bonaventura used a riding point to pick up a 7-6 decision at 174 pounds, before senior
Cameron Fine put together a solid 10-4 win at 184 pounds.
Leading 21-9 with just two bouts left, York kept things interesting with a pin at 197 pounds. Luckily, sophomore
Greg Kumer overcame some early obstacles in his heavyweight mat before cruising to a 13-8 match-clinching win.
After disposing of the Spartans, Waynesburg turned its attention to maybe the toughest dual opponent it will face this year in Mercyhurst (2-0). The Lakers opened up an 11-0 lead after three spirited bouts. Waynesburg freshman
Filippo Crivelli nearly scored a big upset at 133 pounds when he posted an escape and a takedown in the third period against Kody Young. Young ultimately won the contest 6-3.
Foster completed the only 2-0 day recorded by a Waynesburg wrestler with a 3-1 sudden victory triumph over Jeremy Landowski at 149 pounds. The Jackets made it back-to-back wins when senior 149-pounder
Luke Lohr defeated an old familiar face in Tyler Berger 6-1. The two wrestled each other twice in 2010-11 season, when Berger was wrestling for Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson. Lohr is now 3-0 against the fifth-year senior.
Mercyhurst won the final five bouts on the afternoon to close up the victory. Fine nearly pulled an impressive upset before dropping a 1-0 nail-biter to Brian Beattie. Fine bumped up to 197 to face the much larger Beattie.
Mercyhurst started the tri-match by beating York 32-9.
Waynesburg gets a week off to prepare for its next date on the schedule, which is on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the University of Mount Union Duals. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
