ALLIANCE, Ohio (Nov. 23) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team battled through a full day of work on the mat at Saturday's Mount Union Duals. The Yellow Jackets went 3-1 on the day and nearly completed a sweep of their opposition.

The Jackets (4-3) got things going with a solid 22-13 victory over John Carroll University (2-3). The Blue Streaks scored first with a decision win at 125 pounds, but freshman Filippo Crivelli tied things up with a 7-1 decision win over Trevor Medlang at 133 pounds. Waynesburg took its first lead of the day (7-3) thanks to a 9-1 major decision from junior Jake Vitolo at 141 points.

JCU picked up back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 pounds, before junior Sam Guidi tied things up at 10-10 with a 6-4 triumph at 165 pounds. Senior Anthony Bonaventura picked up Waynesburg's biggest win of the contest when he pinned Mike Marotta to put his team back ahead 16-10.

After a John Carroll win at 184, the Orange and Black received an uplifting victory at 197 pounds, where senior Ryan Walters, who missed all of last year with an injury, stepped to the mat for the first time this season. Walters not only performed well while wrestling up a weight class, but he secured a crucial 7-4 decision at 197 pounds that made the score 19-13 Waynesburg.

Sophomore heavyweight Greg Kumer put a bow on the win with an impressive 5-4 decision over Will Porter, who was listed as a "Contender" to the top 10 on the D3Wrestle.com national rankings.

Waynesburg next squared off with the host Purple Raiders, who came into the day ranked 29th in the country. After Mount Union (4-1) built a 6-0 lead, Vitolo scored another impressive victory, this time upsetting Bryant Roby 7-5 at 141 pounds. Roby, like Porter, was listed a "Contender" for the 141-pound top 10 list.

After the Jackets pulled to within three (6-3) of the Raiders, Mount Union fired off back-to-back victories to go up 13-3. Guidi got a potential comeback try off to a great start with a pin at 165 pounds. Bonaventura kept the ball rolling with a 13-5 major decision at 174 pounds that tied the match at 13-13 going to 184 pounds.

Walters nearly pulled out another victory in his first action in over a year, but came up just short in a 6-4 setback at 184 pounds. Leading 16-13 with two bouts to go, the Raiders closed up their win with a pair of decision triumphs. However, junior Dan Mahon locked up a cradle on Lucas Dies at heavyweight, but was unable to stick his opponent to the mat. Dies eventually pulled out an 8-6 overtime win to put the finishing touches on a 22-13 final score.

The Jackets' third match of the day pitted them against Lycoming (2-4), which jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 125-pound bout. Crivelli tied the contest at 3-3 with his second win of the day, before Vitolo moved to 3-0 in Alliance, Ohio with a hard-fought 4-3 triumph that moved Waynesburg ahead 6-3.

After the Warriors tied the match at 6-6 with a win at 149 pounds, the Jackets put the victory away with wins at 157 (Lohr, major decision), 165 (Guidi, pin), 174 (Bonaventura) and 197 pounds (Walters). The Jackets led 22-9 going into the heavyweight bout, which was won by Mahon 1-0 to bring about the final score of 25-9.

Following three matches that weren't decided until at least the 197-pound bout, Waynesburg had a much less suspenseful dual against Gettysburg (1-4). The Bullets forfeited at 125 and 133 pounds, before getting their only contested win at 141 pounds. Junior Chris Milligan picked up his first win of the year with a decision at 149 pounds, before pins by Lohr and Bonaventura sandwiched around a forfeit awarded to Guidi gave the Jackets a 33-3 lead.

Junior Patrick Jennings also scored a win by fall at 184 pounds and Mahon's 8-1 triumph at 197 pounds wrapped up the scoring for Waynesburg. Gettysburg received a forfeit win at heavyweight to bring about the final score of 42-9.

After a full Saturday of competition, the Waynesburg grapplers get a well-deserved break that stretches until Saturday, Dec. 7, when they head to the Ohio Northern Invitational.
