WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 6) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate senior night on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets honored their six seniors before facing arch-rival Thiel at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, and everyone wearing orange and black went home happy after the host team won seven-of-10 bouts to take a 24-9 decision.

The victory gave Waynesburg (9-9) its fourth 2-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) season record during its five years under the leadership of head coach Ron Headlee. The loss dropped the Tomcats to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

Freshman Gordan Bieber got thing started for Waynesburg at 125 pounds. After falling behind his opponent, sophomore Nick Hart, Bieber scored late to pull out a 4-3 victory and put his team up 3-0. At 133 pounds, Alex Crown picked up the first of three wins in three bouts for Jacket seniors by defeating Nick Sutton 6-1.

Even though Waynesburg gave up its first match points at 141 pounds, sophomore Jake Vitolo wrestled well in only giving up a 5-0 decision to Thiel's Adam Matthews, who is a transfer from Division I North Carolina State. Sophomore Chris Milligan got the Jackets back on the winning track with a solid 6-0 victory over Shawn King. Already leading 9-3, junior 157-pounder Sam Lombardo pushed his team's advantage to 12-3 by scoring a 6-1 triumph over Brandan Collins before the two teams broke for intermission.

Thiel struck back by pulling out an overtime decision at 165 pounds and a one-point victory at 174 to narrow the gap to 12-9. However, it was time for another Waynesburg senior, 184-pounder Cody Catalina to regain momentum for the home team, which he did by picking up a 9-4 decision over Marco Crivelli.

With the scoreboard showing Waynesburg ahead 15-9 with two bouts remaining, the match was still very much up for grabs as Jacket sophomore Patrick Jennings stepped to the mat to take on Thiel's Jacob Trillow. After a first period that featured very little action, Jennings brought a tense Waynesburg crowd to a roaring frenzy by turning Trillow to his back and pinning him in 4:37 to make the score 21-9 and sealing the victory for the Jackets.

However, rather appropriately, the Waynesburg wrestlers had one more treat for their fans when senior heavyweight Marty Kisla took the mat against Thiel freshman Blake Heim. The Tomcat rookie came into the match listed in the D3wrestle.com rankings, but as regulation came to a close, the bout was tied 1-1. The contest stayed knotted through the first one-minute of sudden victory and the first set of 30-second ride out periods. After a second scoreless minute of sudden victory, Kisla picked up a quick escape in the third ride out period to go up 3-2. The Jacket veteran picked up perhaps his biggest collegiate win by holding Heim down just long enough in the fourth-and-final 30-second ride out period, before cutting him loose to tie the score at 3-3 and take the win on riding advantage.

With another perfect PAC season in the books, Waynesburg turns its full attention towards regaining the PAC team title on Friday, Feb. 15. The Yellow Jackets will join Washington & Jefferson  at Thiel's home gymnasium for the event, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

NOTE: Another Waynesburg senior, 197-pounder David Wills, scored an exhibition win by defeating Ryan Kenski 6-4. Sophomore Shane Foster won the other exhibition of the night when he downed Thiel's Xavier Williams by 17-5 major decision.
