LATROBE, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University softball team had to wait out an hour-and-20-minute lightning delay before getting its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Saint Vincent underway. The wait to get the opener started was worth it for the Yellow Jackets, who defeated the Bearcats 10-3.
Waynesburg (9-12, 1-6), which snapped out of an eight-game losing streak with the victory, flew out of the gate with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Jackets loaded the bases with one out on the board in the first and junior second baseman
Madison Presto came through with a two-run double that allowed senior leftfielder
Jasmine Blackwell and senior shortstop
Rachael Moon to score and put the visitors up 2-0. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman
Haley Payne came up with a two-run base hit of her own, a single, to double her team's advantage. Waynesburg had an opportunity to do even more early damage after sophomore catcher Jess Gavin slapped a two-out single, but the Bearcats (9-8, 2-5) were able to come up with the inning's third out.
After holding Saint Vincent scoreless in the bottom of the first, Waynesburg extended its lead to 5-0 in the second when junior designated player
Sarah Spicher connected on an RBI single that brought Moon in to score from second base. The Cats put up their first run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Jacket offense had an answer with Presto's second two-run double of the day in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 advantage.
The Jackets put the finishing touches on their best offensive performance against a PAC opponent this season by racking up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Gavin and Moon recorded an RBI each in the final frame. The home team scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but Waynesburg stopped its opposition short of a monumental comeback.
The Yellow Jackets tied a season high with 16 hits in the win, a game-high four of which came from Moon, who also scored a game-high three runs. Blackwell and Presto chipped in three hits each, with the latter putting up a contest-best four RBI.
Junior staff ace
Carrie Maier picked up the win in the pitching circle by giving up just one earned run on five hits and four walks. Maier struck out five on her way to the complete-game victory.
The two teams got game two of the twin bill started, but darkness force a postponement in the middle of the third inning. They'll attempt to complete the late contest on Thursday, April 11, at Waynesburg. The Bearcats will re-start the game with a 1-0 lead.
