WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University softball team broke two seventh- innings ties en route to two dramatic victories and a sweep of Grove City on Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader.
Waynesburg took game one 3-2 after a RBI sacrifice fly by senior shortstop
Rachael Moon scored junior right fielder
Jenna Dorazio for the walk-off victory. The Jackets (11-12, 3-6) extended their current winning streak to three games by using two runs in the top of the seventh inning of game two to break a tie and win 6-4.
Grove City (4-14, 1-7) struck first in game one with a run in the top of the first inning off of junior Jacket ace pitcher
Carrie Maier. However, the home team battled back in the bottom half of the inning with a two runs to take the lead at 2-1. The top of the lineup was productive all day long Moon singled and stole second base in front of junior leftfielder
Jasmine Blackwell, who blasted a two-run homerun over the left-center field fence.
The score remained 2-1 in the Jackets favor until the fourth inning when the Wolverines tied the contest with a two-out run-scoring single. Dorazio turned in the biggest defensive play of the day to save a run in the sixth inning. The All-PAC outfielder gunned out a Grove City runner at the plate to keep the contest tied at 2-2.
Maier again pitched herself out of danger, stranding a GCC runner at third base in the seventh and setting up the Jackets offense for the win in the home half of the frame.
Dorazio singled to start the inning and sophomore centerfielder
Shelby Tabrosky sacrificed her to second base and wound up on first base herself as the Wolverines' pitcher mishandled the ball. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Moon drove in Dorazio to give the Jackets the victory.
Blackwell, Moon and Dorazio each collected multi-hit efforts to pace the Jackets offense in the victory. Maier pitched seven strong innings in the circle, allowing just two runs, scattering seven hits and striking out six Wolverine batters.
Game two remained scoreless until the Jackets struck for two runs in the third inning. The Jackets manufactured two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies by freshman catcher
Brittany Hott and junior
Sarah Spicher. Grove City responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to quickly tie the contest.
Waynesburg quickly regained the lead with two more runs in the fourth inning. After a pair of singles by Dorazio and Tabrosky, junior second baseman
Madison Presto bunted both runners up into scoring position. Moon took advantage of another RBI chance, plating Dorazio to make it 3-2. The veteran infielder then stole second base and Tabrosky stole home to make the score 4-2 when GCC threw the ball to second to try and retire Moon.
The score remained that way until Grove City tied it with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. With a chance at a PAC sweep on the line, Waynesburg found a way in the seventh inning to deliver another clutch performance and earn a hard-fought sweep. Hott walked and Spicher singled to put two Jacket runners on base. Sophomore
Haley Payne then beat out an infield hit to load the bases and keep the inning alive. Dorazio beat out a game-winning infield hit of her own to plate pinch runners
Emily Sorton and Jess Dorazio and put the game away.
Maier finished off Grove City in the seventh to earn her second victory of the day and improve to 7-5 on the season.
Moon, Dorazio and Spicher each put together multi-hit efforts in game two. Dorazio combined for five hits on the day while Moon added four to lead a Jacket offense that totaled 18 hits on the afternoon.
Waynesburg will look to earn its fourth straight win on Monday, April 15. The Jackets are scheduled to complete game two of last week's doubleheader against Saint Vincent. The game was called due to darkness with the Bearcats holding a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning. The game is set to resume at 4 p.m. in Waynesburg.
