WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University softball team used some clutch two-out hitting to comeback and secure a 2-1 victory over Saint Vincent on Monday afternoon. The win not only secured a season sweep of the Bearcats, but also pushed the Yellow Jackets' (12-12, 4-6) current winning streak to four games.
The game, which picked up in the bottom of the third inning, took only 45 minutes to complete. Waynesburg defeated Saint Vincent 10-3 in game one of the season doubleheader last Wednesday. However, game two started late due to weather delays and was eventually suspended due to darkness.
Saint Vincent (9-11, 2-8) started with a 1-0 lead in the third inning and Waynesburg was at the plate when the game restarted on Monday. After a scoreless fourth, the Jackets tied the game with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior leftfielder
Jenna Dorazio started the rally with a single before sophomore first baseman
Haley Payne crushed a double to the right-center field gap that plated Dorazio to tie the contest at 1-1.
Junior pitcher
Carrie Maier retired Saint Vincent in order in the top of the fifth, setting up the Jacket offense with a chance to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Once again, it was a bit of two-out magic that provided the eventual winning run for Waynesburg. Senior shortstop
Rachael Moon singled to set the stage for one of the Jackets' best hitters, junior leftfielder
Jasmine Blackwell. Blackwell delivered a triple to deep center field to easily score Moon and give the Jackets a 2-1 lead.
That was all the offense Maier needed as she upped her record to 9-5 on the season. The junior retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced in relief, including the last 10 hitters in a row. She racked up four strikeouts and surrendered just one hit over four innings of work.
Waynesburg will look to ride the momentum of its current winning streak when the Jackets travel to Greenville, Pa. tomorrow afternoon to face Thiel. First pitch between the Jackets and Tomcats is set for 3:30 p.m.
